What it is
You send me a 1,500 word excerpt of your manuscript (roughly three double-spaced MS Word pages) and let me know what service(s) you are requesting. I will edit and/or proof the pages and send them back to you along with a quote for the project. You get to see what you're paying for, and I get to accurately determine the level of editing the manuscript will need.

Developmental Editing
What it is
This is big-picture editing and is the first step in making your good story great. I offer developmental editing as a standalone service, or I will combine it with any of my other services at a discounted rate. For this level of editing, I will evaluate the overall story arc and give suggestions on how to move the story along better, indicate parts to cut or flesh out, identify any gaping plot holes, address character development, and point out where to change "telling" to "showing." Developmental editing does not include any fixes for content or grammar.

Basic Copyediting
What
it is
This level of editing is review and refinement of the words you've already put on the page. I ensure consistency in names, terms, and tense, check spelling and punctuation, and verify facts. I also address misplaced modifiers, missing or extra words, and proper word usage.

Content Editing
What
it is
This
is the level of editing to choose if you want fundamental suggestions for how
to make your writing stronger. Content editing includes basic copyediting (see above) plus recommendations
for improving clarity and word flow. I also change passive to active voice and look for minor plot holes or pacing issues.

Proofreading
What it is
This is the last step before publishing and includes a final check for correct spelling and punctuation, duplicate words, proper spacing, and minor formatting issues. I offer proofreading as a standalone service if you are confident that your manuscript is polished and ready to go, or I will combine proofreading with any of my other services for a discounted rate. Proofreading does not include any fixes in content or grammar.

My goal is always to make your words and your story the best they can be. At all levels of editing, I work hard to maintain your voice as a writer. As such, I will never make permanent changes to your manuscript. The final decisions on what to keep and what to change are always up to you, the author. I answer emails daily so that I am available to respond to any questions you might have about my suggested changes.

Word using the Track Changes and Comments features, and I edit according to the Chicago
Manual of Style, 17th edition—the bible of book publishing—and Merriam-Webster’s
Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged.
